Managerial behavior, participation, and effectiveness in social welfare organizations

Abstract

A broad range of managerial behaviors were investigated with regard to job satisfaction and absenteeism in human service organizations. A primary composite of participatory management dimensions appeared highly acceptable to social workers and conducive to low absenteeism. Contrary to widespread belief, participatory management was not practiced in most of the agencies investigated. Participatory decision making and goal setting emerged as salient predictors of job satisfaction and absenteeism, with satisfaction with one's superior as the best predictor of absenteeism.
