The Practical Value of Strategic Direction

Abstract

Strategic planning has been imported into social work from the business sector. The Business Plan is a key component of strategic planning & is typically used by management to steer an organization through times of environmental turbulence. This paper argues that the Business Plan is relevant not only for the management structure of an agency, but also for the individual workers within that agency. After presenting the theory of the Business Plan & the plan of his own agency, the author presents the results of a small study (29 social workers). This study found significant positive relationships between the feeling of making a significant contribution to the Business Plan, job satisfaction, energy & motivation for work, commitment to the organization, & perceived client satisfaction. The author discusses the resultant implications & practice recommendations. 1 Figure, 24 References. Adapted from the source document.
