Equity in a Relationship between Individuals and a Fraternal Organization

Abstract

An examination of an impersonal exchange relationship between students & their fraternities & sororities, from the perspective of D. Pritchard's elaboration of equity theory & self theory ("Equity Theory: A Review and Critique," Organizational Behavior & Human Performance, 1969, 4, 176-211). A questionnaire was used to measure 403 Rs' perceived costs & rewards of membership in their organizations (selected fraternities & sororities at a midwestern U), satisfaction with the exchange, & feelings of self-competence. In this impersonal exchange relationship, it was found that Rs perceived high outcomes &, as a result, experienced satisfaction with the exchange. Further, Rs who were more self-competent perceived more positive outcomes from the exchange. 1 Table, 23 References. Modified HA.
