Four Roles for the Community Researcher

Abstract

It is commonly assumed in the social sciences that the role of researcher should be reduced to that of a passive chronicler of social activity. In community research it is suggested that the researcher can play alternative & more active roles. By adopting intervention & action research strategies, the researcher could be an active agent of social change. This role is described in detail & illustrated with personal experience working with a residents' association in an inner-city area in Guildford, England. Two additional complementary roles are also described & illustrated: the researcher as a broker, & as an educator. 24 References. HA.
