Anthropological Studies of Voluntary Associations and Voluntary Action: A Reassessment

Abstract

James N. Kerri's assessment of voluntary associations ("Anthropological Studies of Voluntary Associations and Voluntary Action: A Review," Journal of Voluntary Action Research, 1974, 3, 1, Jan) is expanded upon to include earlier eras, with additions being made in categories that were underrepresented. A critique of Kerri's inclusion of secret societies rests on the premise that, although such societies' members share common interests, their membership is not on a volunteer basis. Modified HA.
