Dominant Statuses and Involvement in Formal Voluntary Associations

Abstract

A study was made using the inductive method to develop a conceptual scheme for predicting the involvement of individuals in voluntary organizations. Data were gathered in fall, 1977, through mailed questionnaires administered to 500 students at a California State Coll. Ss provided sociodemographic information & responded to questions dealing with involvement in voluntary organizations. Results revealed that dominant status on any relevant social dimension was directly related to voluntary organization membership. In addition, possession of a greater number of dominant statuses was indicative of a higher degree of involvement in volunteerism. 2 Tables. M. Cai
