Internal Structure of a Voluntary Political Organization: A Case Study

Abstract

Investigated via participant observation was the internal structure of a storefront office that was part of the mostly voluntary organization supporting G. McGovern in the 1972 presidential campaign. A distinct hierarchy existed, with the only paid worker, the manager, at the top, followed by individuals with titled positions with specific responsibilities, the regulars, the more reliable, consistent, & conscientious workers, & finally, the volunteers, a very fluid group considered to be less dependable than the regulars. Interaction patterns were generally determined by position in this hierarchy. Volunteers received only purposive rewards, having to do with the stated ends of the association, while the titled staff & regulars also seemed to receive expressive rewards, those based on solidarity, interpersonal interaction, & status.
