Lesser Angels and Minor Profits

Abstract

A voluntary association called the "Angels" that supports a civic opera in a midwestern city was studied by means of mailed questionnaires (N = 95 usable responses of 325 Angels members). This organization is one of two that split off from an earlier informal group responsible for the founding & long-time support of the opera. Members with prolonged strong interest in the opera & commitment to it believe that volunteers are responsible for its success. They are also convinced that their function should be purely instrumental; newer members, who lack the opportunity for the same personal involvement with opera production enjoyed by the "Pioneer Angels," support the new professionalization of the opera & a more instrumental-affective function for their group. Further research suggests that the split between professional & volunteer services is a common one, & that this may be a factor in the instrumental-affective function that seems to characterize opera support groups. 5 Tables, 46 References.
