Gay Liberation: An Overview
Abstract
Information from interviews with 11 gay leaders & activists in the
Los Angeles & San Francisco, Calif, areas, published interviews
with leaders & activists, articles by social scientists on the gay
movement, survey data, & statements by political leaders &
police chiefs are used to analyze the development of the M gay
liberation movement in the US since 1950. The preconditions necessary
for this development include: (1) a political climate tolerant enough
to allow the existence of openly gay organizations without constant
harassment, (2) the success of other minority groups, (3) the
introduction of the written communication media for the exchange of
information & messages, & (4) the development of leaders
skilled in mobilizing participants. The organization & origins of
agencies involved in the movement are discussed, using the San
Francisco area as an example. The search for a gay collective identity
involved the replacement of the welfare model of deviants with a
political model which allowed for negotiation with authorities. The
history of the nature & attitudes of those opposing the gay
movement is briefly presented. M. Migalski.
