Associational Politics and Internal Democracy

Abstract

An attempt is made to describe how a voluntary association's internal politics -- & especially the presence or absence of democracy in its mode of operation -- are influenced by the goals & motives of its members. A theoretical typology is proposed for the classification of organizations, based on three basic cells -- utilitarian associations, normative-utilitarian ones, & normative ones -- & on hybrids of these three basic types. 1 Figure, 17 References.
