Industrial Associations: Reflections of an Insider

Abstract

Trade associations are unique among voluntary associations in that their purpose is to promote the interests of member companies, not of individual members. The role of trade associations in the industrial world is discussed in terms of (1) the importance of trade shows as a means of financing association expenses, (2) management training provided by trade groups, (3) the importance of trade associations in providing government with industry views, (4) the lack of trade-group involvement in legislative matters affecting business, & (5) the possible obsolescence of dedication to a specific field of industry.
