Joining Formal Voluntary Associations and Social Action among the Poor

Abstract

Data from a questionnaire administered to a stratified random sample (N = 693) of the Lower East Side of New York City, by the Research Dept of Mobilization for Youth, are used to see if persons of the Lcs & Wcs who join formal voluntary organizations display a greater readiness to take social action than do similar persons who do not join such organizations. Generally, a greater % of members expressed willingness to take social actions such as giving money, signing a petition, meeting with public & private persons, & joining a protest, than did nonmembers, & this difference remained when SC was controlled for. Ethnic-racial origin was also found to be an important variable, with a consistent ranking of willingness among ethnic & racial groups. There also seems to be a rank ordering of the social actions proposed in terms of willingness to participate. 4 Tables. M. Migalski.
