A Critical Examination of Theory and Functions of Voluntary Associations

Abstract

The concept of voluntary associations is examined in terms of varying theoretical perspectives. Focusing particular attention on the functionalist orientation, the many functions attributed to voluntary associations are synthesized into categories representing a limited number of central issues. This task is believed to be only the first step in the development of a unified theoretical paradigm of voluntary associations. Modified Author Conclusion.
