National voluntary health agencies in an era of change: experiences and adaptations

Abstract

The recent Republican administrations have signaled hard times for health and human services through reduction of federal funding, shifting a greater burden to the private sector. A discussion explores how and to what extent voluntary agencies have been affected by and have adjusted to this changing environment. The experiences and adaptations of the national voluntary health organizations (NVHAs) are focused on. It is concluded that NVHAs have had a positive response to their financial needs, from the full range of philanthropic sources, due in large part to their ability to adjust to the changing circumstances and to use the new climate to their own advantage.
