Critical inputs and strategic choice in non-profit human service organizations

Abstract

A discussion explores issues concerning the environmental interactions of nonprofit human service agencies. Changes in funding availability and client demand are identified as the environmental stimuli most important in eliciting particular organizational actions. Building on the work of James Thompson, a model is proposed that details various combinations of changes in these two variables and general categories of responses expected to be associated with each combination. Also detailed are examples of both traditional and nontraditional strategies that may be chosen from each category. A concluding discussion considers the implications for clients of actions most likely to be taken by agencies in the prevailing circumstances of increased interorganizational competition and growing dependence on public agency contracting.
