Resource Exchange Networking: Metaphorical Inventions in Response to Differentiated Human Needs in a Collectivist-Oriented Society

Abstract

The concept of "networking" is explored on the basis of data from a field study. Directors of human service agencies in RI & direct service deliverers (N = 50 each) were asked via mailed questionnaires to identify who, in their experience, they perceived as effective networkers; of those nominated, 20 were interviewed in depth to determine what personal characteristics contributed to this ability. A metaphorical frame of reference is employed, defining networks as loose connections of task-oriented people who communicate to solve problems. In addition to personal characteristics, organizational aspects are considered, & a set of propositions to enhance networking ability is presented. 12 References. Modified HA.
