Is There an Afterlife? How Nonprofits Move toward Self-Sufficiency as Foundation Dollars End

Abstract

Examines how nine demonstration projects, funded under the John A. Hartford Foundation's Generalist Physician Initiative, dealt with short-term funding & their approaches to integrate program elements into parent health care systems, based on interviews conducted in 1994 at all nine sites across the US. Continuation strategies included leveraging with foundation dollars, restructuring physician practices, enhancing community connections, modeling collaboration, & cross-fertilizing projects. To succeed, project managers needed to be sensitive to project selection, transition planning & reporting, project organization & design, management & integration, cultural differences, & project dissemination & support. 5 References.
