Structure and Accountability: A Study of National Nonprofit Associations

Abstract

In the 1990s, the integrity & performance of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in the US have come increasingly under attack, & there are new calls to hold NPOs more accountable. Here, mail survey data from 183 US NPOs are drawn on to analyze their organizational structures & how they can help to self-regulate the sector through appropriate checks & balances between the national organization & local affiliates. A number of differences in how associations with alternative structures hold local affiliates & national organizations responsible for their performances are identified, & it is concluded that structure is an avenue of self-regulation for NPOs deserving further attention. 5 Tables, 23 References.
