Innovation by Nonprofit Organizations: Policy and Research Issues

Abstract

Innovative behavior has been cited as a feature of nonprofit organizations that is particularly attractive to public authorities. Explored here is how a funder formulates a policy with which to select innovative organizations. A classification matrix for types of innovation is developed, & elements of an innovation policy for a funder are identified. Main theories about the spurs & inhibitions to innovation are reviewed to consider how this ordering can be used in the construction of an innovation policy & a research framework.
