Selection, Socialization, and Four Types of Members in the Red Cross Chapter: A Typology of Voluntary Association Members

Abstract

A fourfold typology of voluntary association members is constructed,based on case data from studies on an American Red Cross chapter, & employing two theoretical concepts -- selection & socialization -- drawn from Amitai Etzioni's work on normative organizations (A Comparative Analysis of Complex Organizations: On Power, Involvement, and Their Correlates, New York: Free Press, 1975). Comparisons are made between this typology & those of David L. Sills & of David Horton Smith, Richard D. Reddy, & Burt R. Baldwin. Uses of the typology are suggested
