Aligning leadership needs to the organizational stage of development: applying management theory to nonprofit organizations

Abstract

The authors apply two management principles commonly used in the for-profit sector to nonprofit organizations: organizational life cycles and alignment and principles based on fundamental and widely accepted concepts of open systems theory. Examined is the need for alignment between the two key leaders in nonprofit organizations: the executive director and the board. The authors contend that not only must there be alignment among these two units, but the evolutionary changes within each unit must be recognized and addressed to ensure that a balanced fit is maintained as the organization evolves over time.
