Diffusion of roles: an analysis of social work practice.
Abstract
A study investigated the tasks performed by social workers in Israel. A job-analysis questionnaire was circulated among a random sample of social workers who were union members (N = 304). Results of factor analysis, correlation, analysis of variance, and discriminant analysis revealed an overlap of tasks among the three principal groupings: direct practice, managerial, and teaching roles. Discrepancies were found between the perceived importance of specific tasks and the frequency with which these are currently performed. Possible explanations for the disorderly situation in the field are offered. The need for greater clarity of role definition and for a more systematic assignment of tasks under various roles is stressed. (Journal abstract, edited.)
