Performance appraisal of professional social workers.

Abstract

Performance appraisal is crucial to the effective management of an organization's human resources; and the proper management of human resources is a critical variable affecting an organization's productivity. In addition, recent decisions by arbitration boards and by the courts emphasize the importance of organizations to have well documented and objective records of employee performance relative to advancement, dismissal, or salary increases. The author describes the use of an iterative technique to develop a performance appraisal instrument, called behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS). The format of the BARS consists of a graphic rating scale for each dimension of a job. Behavioral descriptions serve as anchor points and are placed beside the scale at varying heights, depending upon the degree of the dimension under consideration which they exemplify. The author cites the advantages of BARS over traditional rating methods. (Journal abstract.)
