An Empirical Inquiry of Variables Impacting Women in Management in Public Social Service Organizations

Abstract

Questionnaire & interview responses of M & F managers (total N = 575) in state public welfare agencies are analyzed to determine their attitudes concerning the impact of certain variables that may negatively or positively affect the initial movement of women into managerial positions, women functioning as managers, & the promotion of women in the management hierarchy of public social service organizations. An attempt is made to determine if there are significant differences in the perceptions of M & F Rs concerning these impact variables. The findings suggest that several variables have a direct impact -- sometimes negative -- especially in relation to the promotion of women in the management hierarchy.
