Measuring the use of time

Abstract

The most expensive resource for any organization providing a service is staff salaries. It is compelling, therefore, to determine how workers actually use their time in order to make management decisions about work loads, program expansion, and staff planning. To obtain this information as a prelude to program and staff expansion, Casey Family Services, a private child-placing agency with five offices in the New England states, conducted a study of social workers' time use. The authors report on the results of the study, highlighting unique design elements and specific findings often omitted in other published accounts. (Journal abstract.)
