The Latina social service administrator: developmental tasks and management concerns

Abstract

A conceptual framework for understanding barriers to the socialization of Latina into male-dominated managerial occupations is provided. Three developmental tasks--transcending the Hispanic culture, developing a sense of personal identity, and adopting the executive role--are discussed. It is proposed that mastery of these tasks will help the Latina to succeed in these occupations. Four related themes--assertiveness, susceptibility to and manipulation by others, characteristics considered feminine, and isolation on the job--are addressed.
